Ferragudo Beach

If you stand on the pier at the Portimao Marina, you will have a view of Ferragudo. This is an old fishing village that sits at the mouth of the River Arade.

In Ferragudo, you can find a very impressive fort called the Fort of São João do Arade. This fort was built in the 17th century to protect Portimão against pirate attacks. Sadly, this fort is now closed to the public as it is private property now. The incredible stone structure of the fort is still standing and can be seen from the beach. From the beach, you can also see the medieval Fortaleza de Santa Catarina, an equally attractive fortress in Portimão.
